The King & The Commissioner Review.
The Renji-Shaji combo, well-known for socio-political masala films, is back with their trademark theme and trenchant punch lines. A multi-starrer lead by Mammootty and Suresh Gopi, ‘The King and the Commissioner’ depicts the modern socio-political scenario as perceived by the protagonists. Advertisements even refer to it as a film with an extra bone!
The film begins with the plot hatched by Major Rana, a confirmed enemy of India, to kill the Prime Minister of India and unsettle the nation. The major has connections within the Indian State such as police officer Shankar (Devan) and Veerabhadra Chandra Moulishwara Maharaaj(Saikumar) a fake godman. The conspiracy was accidentally uncovered by Nedumudi Venu and his assistant and they had to pay the price for their discovery by death. To solve the mystery of the murder, Joseph Alex IAS and Bharath Chandran IPS, known for their efficacy and courage are deployed. The constant struggle between the evil and the good and the final outcome form the rest of the story.
The story revolves around 2 honest and brave officers battling the system from within. And the main protagonists are not names unfamiliar to us; Joseph Alex IAS and Bharathchandran IPS, popular creations of Renji Panicker in his earlier movies ‘The King’ and ‘Commissioner’.
After a 17 year gap, Renji and Shaji Kailas are back with a bang and this definitely reflects in their movie too! Thrilling and dialogue driven, the movie is sure to set audiences on fire!
The movie is based on communal and commercial politics wherein the main characters, Mammootty and Suresh Gopi, come together to investigate a crime.
Mammootty looks young and charismatic in his role as Joseph Alex and his dialogues are indeed gripping.
Suresh Gopi, always popular for his dialogue renditions, upholds his reputation with his hard-hitting screenplay and intermittent flare-ups.
Saikumar, the anti-hero deserves a special mention here too. He is fantastic in his outright negative role. His personality and the kind of arrogance he mirrors on screen, makes him an award-worthy performer. It's no wonder then that he's so spectacularly introduced in the movie on screen.
Devan has also been given a good performing role and he has done complete justice to it.
All the actors including Samvritha Sunil,Jayan, KPAC Lalitha, Kunjan and Spadikam George have been aptly cast and they have done a neat job.
The dialogues written by Renji are crisp and showered with English one-liners to add the extra punch!
Camerawork by Sharavanan, Shaji Kumar and Bharani K Dharan truly helped bring realism and dynamism to the action-adventure sequences. Samjith's cuts and Rajamani's background scores have also complemented the main theme and feel of the movie.
The chemistry between the leads is striking in ''The King & The Commissioner''.
Here’s a warning; the movie might look a little slow to begin with. But that’s only a temporary illusion. Once the story takes on, you may want to fasten your seatbelts and get ready for the roller-coaster!
An extremely compelling political drama and thriller, the movie is indeed a powerful comeback for the Shaji Kailas - Renji Panicker team.
Verdict: Mass Entertainer.

1993 Bombay March 12 - Review
One of the most thinking actors of our times, Megastar Mammootty's "Bombay March 12" released with good opening . Popular scriptwriter Babu Janardhanan made his debut as director with the movie. Babu Janardhanan who had already penned script for Movies like Achanurangatha Veedu, Vaasthavam, Thalappavu is said to have reserved one of his best writings. "Bombay march 12" is one of the eagerly awaited flicks of the year. The movie features Megastar Mammootty in multiple get ups. Lal,Roma, Shaari, Sadiq, Arun Narayan, Jaikrishna(Unni Mukundhan) also includes the cast.
The film is based on the real life riot incident and bombings that hit Mumbai on March 12, 1993. The film depicts the effect the incident had on the locals of Mumbai and particularly revolves around the effects of the blasts in the lives of common men. The story revolves around Sanathana Bhat(Mammootty), a Hindu priest, who later converts to Islam and becomes Sameer, a Municipality worker. He gets married to Abida (Roma), a young Muslim woman from a village in Kerala. Sameer and Abida have premonitions about the bomb blasts, which change the course of their lives forever.
The film is interesting in parts, but the Best is reserved for the finale. The movie scores points at almost all levels till start to end. The film is filled with several twists and turns. The subplots and there are several are as well-developed as the main story. The pace of the film is just right, it has moments of realistic drama flick."Bombay March 12" is evidently a cut above the rest of the movies in its genre, and what grants it this recognition is its story and screenplay. The ongoings are authentically presented, while maintaining all the necessary ingredients for entertainment. Its not ridiculously predictable like most commercial ventures, but is not dark or miserable like a stereotypical art venture, keeps the perfect balance.
Mammootty delivers a striking performance who discovers that sometimes unclear pathways are revealed before you at the most unforeseen moments. He undoubtedly single-most popularly appealing factor in the film, and it's no surprise he steals the show and walks away with loudest applause. Megastar's expressions, voice and movement bring the character to life. Jaikrishna(Unni Mukundhan), new face has done his role with felicity. His presence and expressions register a strong impact. Roma gets a role to prove her talent and she more than lives up to the expectations. Lal is in bit space or acting but fantastic. Sadiq is incredible in light sequences. Undoubtedly, this is his career-best performance.Shaari and new comer Jyothi performs natural. Other cast like Sharanya Sasi, Arun Narayan, Joe, Rajeev,Jayan, Sreeraman, Anil Murali,Meghanadhan are adequate.
Director Babu Janardhan has paid rigorous attention to the minute details in the recreation of moments in March 12,1993. Technically, Bombay March 12 is at top with Veteran Vipin Mohan's outstanding camerawork with Afsal Yousuf's melodious music. Edits by Vijai Shankar is appreciable.
"Bombay March 12" is a winner in unexpected ways for the whole crew. First-time director Babu Janardhan spears the content to a dashboard that dashes all over the mind of audience. Bombay March 12 ,is a film with a realistic theme but at the same time its retains the essence of real cinema.
Verdict: Good.

Pranchiyettan and The Saint - Review
Once in a while along comes a movie that makes your spirits soar and helps you forget the mediocrity that this medium often serves. That is does it without seeking recourse to any manipulative tools, that we are all too familiar with, makes is even more remarkable. It solely depends on unalloyed storytelling skills. Director Ranjith's latest offering Pranchiyettan and the Saint, starring Mammootty, is one such effort where the viewer is drawn into the story to experience the sheer joy of it. This film just tells the story of a rich but uncouth simpleton, C. Francis -- popularly known as Pranchiyettan. As his family has been into rice business, he is also known by a nickname Aripranchi, and this pains him. So, he makes serious efforts to get rid of the nickname -- and his efforts include diversifying into other businesses and supporting worthy charitable causes. But, as fate would have it, the nickname that has troubled him since school days, never leaves him. Even the efforts that he makes are hilarious: one of them is starting a jewellery shop, contesting the elections for the president-ship of an aristocratic cultural club of the city, and even buying a Padmasri award for himself. The brain behind all these efforts is his friend Vasu Menon (Innocent). The story takes a turn when he meets a female artist by the name of Padmasri (Priyamani) who wants Pranchi to inaugurate her painting exhibition, the proceeds of which are to go to charity. His name has been suggested to her by his childhood flame Omana (Kushboo). He had lost Omana to his arch rival Jose (Siddique), who is a reputed doctor now. What works for the narrative of this film is the simple humour, which is continued till the fag end of the film. Initially Mammootty is ably supported by Innocent and Tini Tom in the comedic portions of the film. In the latter half the responsibility falls on Priyamani to support him. Another twist that gives some depth to the story is when Pranchi takes the responsibility of a wayward teenager Pauli (Master Ganapathi) to help him clear his tenth class board exams at the behest of his school principal, played by Sivaji Guruvayur. The film depends heavily on Mammootty's histrionic skills to be convincing and it works. It is this effortless and natural performance that gives Pranchiyettan the lifeblood. Mammootty as an actor has resorted to slapstick comedy to prove his credentials too, but in this film it is quite different -- the middle aged character that he plays here possesses a natural sense of humour and does not require any help in the form of slapstick situations. Among the supporting cast, Innocent gives ample support to Mammootty in keeping our attention rivetted to the screen. It has been a long time since he has portrayed such a character, but here he gets a chance to bring back the memories of vintage Innocent that we fondly remember. Priyamani may not have much screen time for a leading lady but her performance will remain etched in viewers' memory. On the whole, the success of Pranchiyettan and the Saint rests on the shoulders of writer director Ranjith who gives a meaty story to actors to dig their teeth into. It is the near flawless script and direction that give this simple and straight forward narrative multiple dimensions.

STYLE ICON Dr.MAMMOOTTY 'N' YOUTH ICON PRITHWIRAJ in "POKKIRI RAJA"
Witnessing the growth of Prithviraj as a mass hero with the new flick ‘Puthiya Mukham’, many Mollywood cinephiles will definitely dream of a chance of getting together this young artist with any of the super stars who are driving the industry for decades. The recent developments in Mollywood suggest that there is a chance for this dream to get materialized.
Young super star Prithviraj will now team up with Mammootty for the new flick titled ‘Pokkiri Raja’. This is the first time Prithvi is getting a chance to share the screen space with Mammootty. Prithvi will now play a meaty role as younger brother to the character played by megastar Mammootty. Once planned with emerging star Narain this reschedule is also a part of the clash of dates that Narain had, since his one big project in Tamil ‘Pookkada Ravi’ is yet to get completed.
This biggest casting coup in recent days of Mollywood is brought out by debutante director Vaishakh Abraham, who will start calling the shots for the movie from the first week of January. Sibi K Thomas-Udhay Krissna are in the scripting department while P Sukumar will be in charge of the camera. Mulakupadam release will produce this big budget movie, which will be the Vishu offering of both the stars.

Good Opening for Daddy Cool
